From Africa to Austin

May 15, 2018

This week has been a busy one! Tuesday I did a double trip with fellow guide Jake Kennemer, I had some clients who's family wanted to get out on Lake Travis. They were from east Africa, visiting their son who lives here in Austin. It was a blast hearing about the differences and similarities between the different types of fishing they have, versus what we have here in the US.

We split up into two groups and headed out. We couldn't have asked for a better day, we launched at 7am to a glass calm lake, warm temps, and a few clouds in the sky. We started off in Sandy Creek chasing a school of fish I have been on. For this trip I picked up some live bait as the group I had did not have much fishing experience. In addition to minnows, small swimbaits like a 4 inch Keitech; a Megabass 110 jerkbait,  and small silver jigging spoon have been working well.

Look for flats adjacent to deep water, or structure near deep water and start graphing. Early in the mornings and late in the evenings you will find fish busting on the surface. This is when I pull out the jerkbait or a topwater spook.

In total my group caught 18 bass having lost several at the boat or when they jumped. If you are thinking of getting out on the water, now is the time to do it! If you are looking for a local Austin fishing guide give Torwick's Guiding Service a call and get out there!
