Terrible Weather but Good Fishing!

October 12, 2019

This morning I woke up to wind up to 18 mph, light rain, and temps in the 50's. Typical Texas... we go straight from summer to winter. You know what they say, if you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes.

I met Connor at the boat ramp this morning and we headed out. It was choppy on the lake, but nothing my 21' Skeeter boat couldn't handle. I would not have been comfortable being in a smaller 18 or 19 foot boat. Safety is my first priority, and I know my limitations. Had it been worse we would have canceled, but as long as you know how to approach the swells and respect the lake you can move around safely.

Due to the swell size I opted to stick close to the ramp rather than run way up lake. This actually worked out well as we ended up catching quite a few fish on the lower end! We actually lost count of how many we caught.

We started the trip throwing a 1.5 KVD squarebill crankbait and a 3/8 ounce white spinner bait. Lake Travis has really been showing off ever since that last cold front. Despite the weather the fishing was really good today. I believe this is due to the warmer water starting to cool, but not to the point that it slows down the fish's metabolism.

The fishing will actually continue to improve as the water cools, up until it get too cold... typically down in the lower 60's. Moving baits will be key, but plastics will continue to produce. My recommendation is to keep a drop shot tied on at all times, but commit to those moving baits while it's early.

I have a couple openings next week, so hit me up if you are lookin for a fishing guide in Austin!
